Context

The largest Women’s Basketball event in the world

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is the largest event in female basketball, as it declares the world champion of all national teams. The best players on the planet gather every 4 years to discuss this coveted title.

The edition of 2018 took place in Tenerife, Spain. This was the  rst edition to use the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup name. After 2014, FIBA changed the name of the competition from “FIBA World Championship” for Women, to align its name with that of the corresponding men's competition.

A new name, a new brand.

Challenge

To create a brand universe that highlighted the host and the game

The new denomination of the event made clear that the host country - in this case, Spain, Tenerife - would gain a different expression in the design of the new visual identity.

The characteristics of the host country could be presented in an unseen manner in the branding of this tournament, as the previous editions’ designs had a more rigid formal structure.

The key was to identify the element that could inspire the whole brand universe, focusing on the island of Tenerife, the largest and most populous island of the Canary Islands.

“The new context of the brand demanded a whole new creative approach. The local terrain characteristics were absolutely inspiring, as they provided hints to create something that would be both honouring the Host Country and this magnificent event.”

Solution

The source of inspiration

Mount Teide, which has the highest elevation in Spain, and the highest elevation among all the islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is also the third-largest volcano in the world.

This magnanimous scale and the amazing sea environment that surrounds Tenerife were the main inspirations for the development of the visual identity.

We combined a very high elevation, such as the scale of the game of basketball, the power of a volcano, like the energy of women’s empowerment, and an environmental background, helping to add the brand communication with a positive message, highlighting the importance of our Planet’s oceans.

An Official Emblem made to impress

The Official Emblem shows basketball from an all-new point of view, portraying di erent depths and heights, as an analogy to Tenerife island and the topometry of its famous volcano.

One can identify several elements, such as a basketball, passion, fans, the Teide volcano, as well as the sea with all its mesmerizing colours.

A powerful visual identity

The seven islands of the Canary archipelago are represented by special human elements, as the athletes that emerge for a world-class performance.

These unique characteristics of Tenerife and the natural ambition of taking part in a FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup were the starting point for the design concept.

The Visual Identity is the symbol of the momentum of the game, as it rises like never before - new locations, gender equality, driving change, the increase of engaged fans.

Inspiring the Official Ball

The Official Ball of the tournament inspired its decoration in the branding developed, incorporating the ocean and Teide volcano, as well as players and fans.

“Creating a visual system for a Basketball World Cup brand is something of a dream. On the other hand, this also requires revisiting a set of visual elements that we relate to this global sport. For this brand, it was gratifying to develop an ownable system, making it relatable and exciting for every stakeholder, from fans to sponsors.”
